FOCUS: e-Lig series, Online roster.

One year ago, six esports organizations assembled at Kenyatta University to compete in a premier FIFA esports competition run and organized by Ace Pro Gaming.

The competition opened up arguably a hot topic in the FIFA community in Kenya. The e-Lig series enabled the growth and development of Esports teams helping the sports franchise develop much deeper in the esports ecosystem in Kenya.

Arguably the biggest game in Kenya, FIFA boasts of a huge following accounting to 95% of the game played in every game lounge located in Nairobi. The FIFA competitive market has also seen a huge jump in numbers of entries as casual gamers continue to transition from the day to day casuals to going up against competitors.

The e-Lig saw players get tournament experiences and new competition from players who they do not face regularly.

ONLINE EXPERIENCE

The e-Lig series was set to kick off this year after the 2019 trial dubbed Season Zero but was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The series is set to have its online division kick off this month as we commence on building our local FIFA scene.

With the Tekken 7 Savanna Fight Night (SFN) ongoing, the FIFA competition will bring our roster of competitions to two with plans to add the Mortal Kombat community into our online division.

We look forward to having a great competition of FIFA while engaging Kenya’s biggest esports community.

Follow our social media pages for new information concerning the FIFA competition.

Focus: The Tekken254 Challenges & SFN Two

“You issued the challenge, and now you have it”

Robert “T-Vet PokerFace” Mathu’s statement during Fight Night Two is all the competitive series is all about. You called me out, here I am, let’s get going. Kaffi “Ghost” issued a challenge to DVK and for sure he got it. The challenges are the foundation of the competition. Challenging anyone registered in the SFN online battles is also a challenge to self, the competition also automatically makes you challenge yourself.

The Savanna Fight Nights (SFN), happening bi-monthly continues to showcase Kenya’s Tekken and Esports community. The online battles are a package game mechanics, fun, style of play, character knowledge, and the most important thing, the community.

So, what about challenges, what are they?

“I called you out, itabidi you show up and battle”

So far, twelve registered players from the Tekken254 Circuit, two weekends in the month, a live stream, and lots of fun. The challenges are made to ease the understanding of the game within the Kenyan Tekken community, build rivalries, and maintain competitiveness after the Offline League got suspended.

Issuing Challenges

With four-fight schedules on the roster, any player can issue a challenge to anyone registered for the competitive battles. The challenges are issued immediately after the end of any SFN Battles with a deadline on the Wednesday leading to the next Savanna Fight Night. The challenges always have an undercard fight which is played in a First-to-Three sets format while the main card fight features the First-to-Five format.

Challenges which feature players ranked in the top five positions always head down to the community to voting for which Fight will feature in the main card fight of the given Night.

Winning and losing

If a lower-ranked player beats his opponent during any challenge, he or she takes up the rank spot of the loser and at the same time pushes players below them by one place. Take an example DVK v. Ghost fight last weekend.

DVK v. Ghost

So, DVK accepted the challenge from Ghost, what does this mean?

This simply means, DVK, ranked second in the SFN fought against Ghost (ranked 12th) during the Fight Night undercard fight (First-to-3 sets). DVK had to respond to the challenge but had he lost; he would fall to 12th place leaving space for Ghost to jump 11 places up to the second position.

The challenges offer the SFN and the Tekken254 community a competitive edge like no other. The community continues to showcase its strength and growth since its inception. The beauty about these challenges is the individual players’ character knowledge, the competitive format and the stakes of each Fight. The fact that we get to watch Kenya’s best Tekken players go head to head in a competition which is selected by themselves. Giving the players a chance to choose their opponents also gives it a good friendly rivalry in the community plus all the fun that comes with it.

The SFN heads to its third night next weekend (10th July) with only one out four fights scheduled.

The Focus: Mickey v. MoM_Frost

For Frost and Mickey, the Tekken254 Circuit has always been their ground for showcasing a portion of their talent. The Circuit, currently in its fourth season, has seen a lot of changes not just from the management side but player side too. Every player has improved tremendously making the competition stiffer and more entertaining to watch.

AP_MICKEY

The USIU Psychology student is well known for his great knowledge of the Tekken 7 game within the Kenyan Tekken community. The current Kenyan league champion has played in all 17 tournaments winning a total of 128 Sets and losing in only 4. He boasts of a record carrying 16 tournaments and losing one to the person he will be facing in the Fight Night opener, Frost.

The humble kid has also represented Kenya in one of the Tekken World Tour Masters Event that was held in Dubai last year, a low-key move in the Kenyan Sports industry. Mickey managed a joint-65th position finish in a loaded tournament that attracted top class Tekken7 players such as Knee, Fergus, LowHigh, Ulsan and other Tekken greats.

MoM_FROST

Hardworking, humble and hungry, this is the only way we can describe him. The 20-year-old player signed to Nairobi’s up and coming Esports Organization Masters of Mayhem continues to improve in every tournament he enters. He has managed to improve his Set Wins in every season to pushing himself to a regular top-three finish alongside Mickey and DVK. He has so far participated in 15 Tekken254 sanctioned tournaments winning 80 Sets while dropping 37.

MoM_Frost v. Mickey

The Masters of Mayhem sponsored player Frost will face Mickey in a First To 10 (FT10) matchup on the 22nd of this month. The matchup will be the opener of the Fight Night series that is set to kick-off two weeks later (5th and 6th) with an undercard and main card fight on the roster.

Ace Pro Gaming: 2020 WRC 9 Game, Kenya will be part of the three newly introduced stages.

Motorsports fans in Kenya received great news last year when the WRC awarded Kenya a host status for the 2020 WRC Calendar. Kenya is set to host the 8th leg of the 14 WRC Series stops this year.

Apart from this, Esports and video game lovers, especially motorsport video game in Kenya were further blessed with a trailer of the new WRC game set to drop this year in September featuring a Kenyan stage. The new stage is part of the three new stages announced by the WRC 9 Game developers.

We looked forward to seeing a new challenge in the game.

Ace Pro Gaming: Esports consumption continues to grow in times of major sports leagues suspensions and cancellations.

The suspension of local sports leagues such as Kenya Cup, Kenya Premier League, Championship Rugby, Inter-Varsity games, school games add to the list international leagues such as NBA, NHL, EPL, Marathons, Golf events due to the coronavirus is slowly giving Esports (online) a spotlight.

Athletes & celebrities are using online platforms such as twitch to connect with fans, followers and brands. Both competitive and casual play is taking over the social sphere as many people are on lockdown and isolation at home.

The US and Europe sports leagues have seen many athletes, clubs, organization and individual players take to their social media appearing in many video games streams and casual play of various title games.

The Australian Grand Prix that was cancelled got a great social content strategy with Veloce Esports driving a hashtag (#NotTheAusGP). This competitive racing simulation attracted Pro Formula 1 drivers, Esports drivers, Pro soccer players, Youtubers and many other content creators

Esports is slowly positioning itself as an alternative to traditional sports. Sports title games such as FIFA, F1 and Motorsports (WRC) are taking the opportunity to tap into the growing demand for live sports content during this lockdown.

Veloce Esports is organizing a second event to be streamed live on twitch titled (NotTheBahGP) positioning the cancelled live Bahrain Grand Prix.

The esports space will fill in the void left with the absence of daily weekend sports such as the NBA, NHL and soccer leagues across the world. Esports is seeing an opportunity to showcase its strength as an alternative to entertainment, competition and engagement.

“If there was ever a time in sports history that digitally-native forms of entertainment would be top of mind, it’s now”

Ace Pro Gaming will be launching a few numbers of online competition over this period to showcase Kenya’s Esports scene.

The Leyton Orient F.C organized “Quara-Team” challenge is seeking to connect over 70 teams across many different leagues and competitions to play in a FIFA20 Knock out the online competition.

Ace Pro Gaming: Inside the Savanna FGC

A community of Fighting Game players competing in an eight-month schedule monthly. A Kenyan community is slowly positioning itself in the African Esports market.

The Savanna Fighting Game Community (FGC) currently has two fighting game titles (Tekken 7 & Mortal Kombat 11). Both of these community members meet periodically to compete in the Savanna Circuit.

THE SAVANNA CIRCUIT (Tekken254 Circuit & The Kenya Kombat Series)

The circuit constitutes an eight-month league schedule with 7 tournaments in total. The Tekken254 Circuit runs the Tekken title game and is in its fourth season while the Kenya Kombat Series (named Rampage Series due to naming rights) is in its first-ever season.

The players are competing for points each tournament with a target to finish top 16 and advance for the Savanna Majors that is scheduled later in the second quarter of the year.

2020 SEASON SCHEDULE

The year kicked off with the Circuit opener in January where MoM_Frost bagged Q1 while back to back to back champion Mickey finished second. This was the first time Mickey failed to bag a qualifier.

Fast forward to the second qualifier, Frost re-ignited his flames and sent Mickey to the losers’ bracket but later fell to DVK in the Winners’ Finals. DVK booked a grand final against Mickey. Mickey proved he is still the best in the community by resetting the bracket and beating DVK (3-0)

The circuit took a break this month and will be back on April 25th. As organizers, we acknowledge the coronavirus situation in our country and we will be monitoring the situation as we prepare for the third Qualifier.
